A homeowner with a vision of an upsized old style farmhouse using a heavy Douglas Fir timber frame was the only way for this home to go. The overall effect was one of strength and solidity - the timbers were scaled up to match the mass of the 10,500 square foot building. The Douglas fir logs were rough-sawn, burned and wire brushed prior to the stain & clear coat finish to achieve the rural appearance of the farmhouse style the client was looking to achieve.

The owner of this well-known Canmore restaurant chose the name to commemorate the mining and rail road heritage of the area. The restaurant is an authentic timber frame structure and boasts enormous trusses designed to reflect the railroad trestle's of the past and are fastened together with large exposed steel bolts and plates. The bridge is 46 meters (151 feet) across & spans the Kicking Horse River it’s the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in Canada.
The bridge was built 2001, with over 100 members of the Timber Framers Guild came from the US, Europe and all over Canada to help raise the bridge.
The superstructure weighs approximately 210,000 lbs and was constructed of 72,000 bd.ft of Douglas-fir timbers, the timbers were cut & provided by Canadian Timberframes.
If you were to lay out the wood used end to end it would = 24 regulation football field lengths.
The massive timber fink trusses on the front & rear exterior lends this design to classic chalet architecture. The mono pitch truss over the garage, as the name suggests, has only one rafter, producing essentially a right-angle triangle giving a modern twist to their cottage. Impressively large Park entrance off of Bow River exit. The upper log is 36" in diameter and 65' in length. The side main columns are 48" diameter with 30" decorative columns attached to their sides.

This structural timber frame design was built with seismic building codes in mind, being on the Pacific coast, the seismic codes are necessary in the planning phase. This home was designed & constructed in 2005. The home owner wanted hand peeled log accents in the interior to mix alongside the timber frame. Timber framing uses mortise and tenons (precision cut and pegged together) adding strength and character over both conventional framing as well as post and beam construction.

The town library wanted an update to freshen it up & blend with the mountain culture of the town. So a heavy timber entrance and accents were designed for them on the exterior of the building, giving it a more rustic mountain feel.

A dedicated crew raising in the snow, hitting the deadlines for this customer. A great shot of a Scissor Truss raised into place. A scissor truss eliminates vertical and horizontal elements. It creates a more spacious feeling, because there's no horizontal timbers defining a lower "virtual" ceiling line; this was the look and feel this homeowner was looking for. This type of truss is also appropriate when the ceiling pitch, or slope, isn't very steep. A shallow pitch, can still be quite spacious with this truss style.

The local Home Hardware store needed to expand and purchased a new property. They wanted this new store to blend with the mountain culture of the town and designed a large commercial space with heavy timber accents on the exterior of the building, to give it a more rustic mountain feel.

Sometimes, aesthetically effective timber-frame entrances don't require overhead trusses to add interest. The timber brackets supporting the roof line and deep porch roof offers a four-season shelter for arriving and departing guests. The siding 'Autumn Leaf' plus natural stone reflect the fantastic fall colors that are indigenous to this region.
