The Art, Romance & History Of Timber Framing

There is a certain aspect of romance in the age-old construction technique of timber framing. The longevity and soundness of these structures is legendary; buildings crafted with the timber frame method can stand for centuries.

Timber frame construction originated with churches, barns and other buildings in Europe over 1,000 years ago. Now, timber frame homes are gaining in popularity in North America; their soaring, open-space architecture offers an undeniable appeal, and lends itself to expanses of glass that lets breathtaking views become part of the interior. The clean, strong lines of timber framing make it well-suited for both contemporary architecture and rustic mountain homes.

A current trend in timber framing is the use of reclaimed and antique wood. While these timbers will have an aged look and texture, it’s important to ensure that the wood retains structural integrity and is cost-effective.

Some timber frame companies are able to offer an antique finish on newly milled and professionally graded timbers. Architects and clients can now ask for this age-old timber appearance on new high-grade timbers and incorporate that antique feel into your new timber frame home.
