As demand rises for high-performance building solutions, more architects, builders, and clients are turning to timber framing not just for its aesthetics, but for its speed, precision, and long-term value. Pre-finished timber frame packages, particularly those from vertically integrated manufacturers like Canadian Timberframes, are helping high-end builders streamline construction without compromising on design integrity.
Two of our long-standing builder partners based out of New Hampshire, Jason Drouin Custom Homes and Hayward & Co, have delivered many exceptional custom timber frame homes over the years. Both companies are known for their craftsmanship and commitment to quality, values we share at Canadian Timberframes. That shared focus has made our partnerships especially strong. We sat down with both teams last year (2024) to discuss why building with timber is relevant in today’s high-performance housing market.

So, what makes pre-finished timber frame packages such a valuable tool for builders and clients alike?
Pre-finished timber packages are manufactured in controlled environments using advanced CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machinery. At Canadian Timberframes, this includes full in-house timber design, milling, finishing, and quality control, all under one roof. This process eliminates many of the inconsistencies that can occur with traditional on-site timber cutting.
Factory conditions remove variables such as moisture exposure, incorrect joinery, or inaccurate measurements. The result is exceptional precision and consistency, simplifying assembly on site and minimizing on-site waste.
Because components are pre-cut, pre-drilled, and finished prior to delivery, timber frames can be erected (or as we like to say - go vertical) far more quickly than with conventional methods. In many cases, raising the frame takes as little as two to five days, depending on the size and complexity of the home.
Jason Drouin shared how that speed shows up in practice: “Once it's on-site, we go from a shell to something impressive in days, not weeks.”
Hayward & Co adds: “Engineered and pre-fabricated timber frames allow us to complete large complicated projects efficiently thus increasing our cycle time."
Faster installation reduces labour costs, minimizes exposure to weather-related delays, and allows other trades to begin their work sooner. For builders, this translates into better schedule control and smoother jobsite operations.
Pre-finished timber packages enable more reliable project timelines. With structural elements arriving ready to install, builders avoid many of the common disruptions that can derail progress, such as material shortages or on-site fabrication delays.
According to Hayward & Co: “Because the timber is pre-finished, we don’t need to bring in another crew to make it look good. It’s already done.”
Clients also benefit. Reliable timelines improve move-in forecasting, reduce interim financing needs, and increase confidence in the overall project plan.
Vertically integrated manufacturers like Canadian Timberframes oversee every phase of production, from log selection to final finishing. This comprehensive control results in fewer defects, less waste, and a higher-quality finished product.
Each timber is graded, dried, machined, and finished with precision. Before delivery, components undergo quality checks to ensure they will integrate cleanly during site assembly. This level of precision and quality control can be difficult to replicate with traditional, on-site framing methods.
Jason Drouin commented on the visible difference: “The lumber shows up straight. The finish is furniture-grade. I can’t get that kind of consistency anywhere else.”

Pre-fabrication also supports environmental sustainability by minimizing waste. Digital cut plans ensure that timber usage is optimized, and offcuts are either repurposed or recycled. Canadian Timberframes makes an effort to source wood from SFI-certified forest stands, reinforcing a commitment to responsible forestry.
Reducing material waste not only benefits the environment but also enhances cost-efficiency and aligns with the values of today’s eco-conscious clients.
Pre-finished timber frame packages offer measurable benefits:
For architects, builders, and homeowners, pre-finished timber solutions provide more than a structural shell. They offer a more controlled, efficient, and refined approach to custom residential construction—delivering long-term value that stands the test of time.
